Tesla Quartet

Since the ensemble’s formation at Juilliard in 2008, the musical chops of the Tesla Quartet have been confirmed by a ton of prestigious prizes, appearances at all the right international venues and festivals, significant collaborations and residencies, and a couple of highly-praised albums. Then the pandemic struck. Undaunted, the Teslas ramped up their technological skills to thank the heroes of the New York Presbyterian Hospital with weekly virtual concerts. They launched Alternating Currents, an online commissioning project in support of struggling composers. They contributed to the start-up of ImmerSphere, “an immersive augmented reality virtual concert experience.” As COVID eased, the quartet returned to traditional concertizing and international touring. Committed to education and community, the group also plays at sites ranging from K-12 schools and universities to retirement communities, with pop-up coffee shops, craft breweries, soup kitchens, libraries, and hospitals in between. A dedication to climate action has focused recent Tesla programming on trees and tides, with performances employing both aural and visual tools. Inspired by the philosophy and creativity of its namesake Nikola Tesla, the quartet combines artistry and technology in experimental and interdisciplinary ways.
